Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A senior official said the incident left him speechless and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
