Some experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the rising cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed problematic material and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Digital Trading Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at residence.

After moments of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. Platform Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it actively moderated harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Professional Cautions

“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current cost increases for authorized slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using online platforms. But fake injections are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has already seen individuals harmed by personal administration from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Statement

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
