Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
