Seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
